What is the Exposition Text?

Exposition text is a non-fiction text that contains and explains information or knowledge based on actual facts.  An information or knowledge in the exposition text is conveyed briefly, clearly, concisely, and accurately.

The Function of Exposition Text

The purpose of writing an expository text is to explain information or knowledge from the author based on actual facts in order to add insight or views of the reader.

Characteristics of Exposition Text

The following are the characteristics of expository text material:

1. Convey information or knowledge in a short, clear, solid, and straightforward language according to the (standard) spelling.
2. Information or knowledge based on actual conditions (factual).
3. The content of information or knowledge contains elements of what, who, where, when, why, where.
4. The exposition text is objective (according to the truth) and impartial (neutral).

Exposition Text Structure

To write expository text, we need to know its structure.  The following is the structure of the exposition text:

1. Introduction or thesis
The first structure of the exposition text is the introduction or thesis, which can be called the main idea part.  In this section the author conveys the core information or knowledge that will be conveyed.

2. Explanation or argumentation
The second structure of exposition text is explanation or argumentation.  In this section, the author describes the background for selecting the main idea based on the facts that support it.

3. Reaffirmation or conclusion
The third structure of the exposition text is reaffirmation.  This structure is the closing structure of the exposition text.  In this section the author rewrites the conclusions briefly and clearly.

Exposition Text Compilation Pattern

Exposition text can be arranged according to the following patterns:

• Deductive Pattern
Exposition text with a deductive arrangement pattern begins with a general description or idea at the beginning of the text (or the first paragraph).  Then, it is specifically explained in the next paragraph.

• Inductive Pattern
An exposition text with an inductive arrangement pattern begins with a specific description or idea, then continues with a general explanation.

• Comparison Pattern
The exposition text which is arranged with a comparison pattern means that the information or knowledge in it is based on a certain comparison.

• Illustration Pattern
Exposition text arranged with an illustration pattern means information or knowledge that is described by providing illustrations.  This is done so that it is easier for readers to understand the information presented.

The Danger of Throwing Garbage in the River

Thesis

In the current era of globalization, littering activities such as in rivers seem to have become commonplace.

Even the number of people who litter in the city is increasing.  This makes the river flow clogged with garbage so that when it rains with continuous intensity, the river overflows and causes flood disasters.

Argument

From time to time, the number of individuals who litter especially in rivers continues to increase, this is the conclusion of many observers. Humans still haven't given up on throwing garbage in rivers that can cause flooding.

In fact, the victims of the flood disaster itself are not small.  Many people have been injured or died due to flooding. However, this is still not enough to raise awareness for people who are still littering.

Reaffirmation

Should have known the effect, people would be aware not to litter anymore so as not to harm themselves, others, and also the surrounding environment.

If there is no garbage in the river, the river water will not be clogged and can minimize flooding, even if it rains heavily.
